Bangalore Doctor Kills Self After Parents Reject British Fiancée

London, Dec 17 (IANS): A heartbroken India-born doctor in Britain committed suicide after his parents, citing cultural differences, disapproved of his wish to marry a fellow physician.

Anaesthetist Madhu Honnaiah, 33, from a hospital in Swansea, a coastal city in Wales, where he worked after splitting with fiancée Emma Wrighton, swallowed drugs, Daily Mail reported.

An inquest heard that Honnaiah's parents, from Karnataka's Bangalore city, had objected
to his engagement to British-born Wrighton, 32, who had refused to have a Hindu wedding.

Honnaiah had begun a relationship with fellow doctor Wrighton in 2008 while working in Liverpool. She later got a job in Australia but they stayed in touch and moved in together after she returned to Britain. The two doctors got engaged in 2010. But he did not inform about it to his parents.

He was wary of telling his parents about the relationship due to their cultural beliefs, investigating officer PC Huw Evans told the inquest.

"During a visit to Britain from India, his parents learned of the relationship and said they weren't happy about it. It was said his parents wanted him to marry someone from his caste or from the Bangalore area of India where he grew up," Evans said.

Honnaiah was alone when he injected himself with two drugs used in surgery seven months after their split.

"After the breakdown of his relationship, concerns about Dr Honnaiah's state of mind were raised by his colleagues," Evans said.

An eight-page hand written letter made it clear that Honnaiah intended to take his own life.

Regrettably parents love, sacrifice and hopes are totally waste. What a use of spending so many years to become a doctor to serve the society and killing himself. Are the parents wrong here...? probably no because after so much sacrifice they may expect their daughter in law is the one who can speak to them freely and fit into their family. I am not against anything but feeling pity on the parents. Three things will last foreverfaith, hope, and loveand the greatest of these is love. Is this parents love towards to their son or son's love towards his fiancee.

Does a couple in today's world actually need their parents permission to & marry someone of their own choice ?

It was a different matter in the good old days i.e. 1940's & 1950's. The world has changed ever since and will continue to change. We have to accept these things although we have grown up children. We as parents can only put forward our views ( old 1970 model views ! ) but without any force or compulsion.

Many a times a girl or boy from a different community are much better than from the same. The family politics too will be far less ! My own sister ( a Doctor ) married his Mangalorean catholic Doctor classmate in Scotland 28 years ago and are very very happy. They have 3 beautiful children. To further add a point, the mentality of the couple should be the same.

My deepest sympathy to the Honniah family on this great loss. May Madhu Honniah's soul RIP.

Shame of that parent who lives in a olden century. Embrass the reality of life and its freedom of love in marriage which one can feel freely without any interference. Religion in nothing other than peace, love and happiness. Too much thinking about religion/caste, society resulted into the death of young man. Best is please allow the youth to choose thier life partner, religion and have a life themself rather controlling, directing what to do and not results negative results. People learn from examples in future.

Another person like Jacintha. One suicide was Hoax call which was Royal One and another culture call which was Unroyal one. Now let the media blow it out of proportion like they did for JS. We Indians have become so weak and Cheap.

Very sad. May his soul rest in peace. He is right on his side and his parents are right on their side. Whom to blame? I think expectation is the root cause for all the problems in the relationships.

Instead of taking his own life marrying his fiancee would have been better for him and to his family. What kind of mentality is this..?? Being educated acting like illiterate ..??? Does this suicide helps his parents, fiancee or himself or anybody in this world..????
