Mangalore: Differences 'Stand Out' at TP Standing Committee Elections

Mangalore, Nov 28: The election of various posts of standing committee for taluk panchayat was held amidst chaos, raging tempers and arguments here on Tuesday November 27.
As soon as the meeting started, the opposition Congress party members stayed away stating that the president had not come and the meeting did not begin on time. Even after the arrival of the president for the meeting, Congress members stayed away.
MLA Krishna J Palemar and president Harish pleaded Congress members to join the meeting. Members headed by MLA UT Khader finally agreed.
However, as soon as the meeting began for the selection of the standing committee president, a brawl erupted between party members over difference of opinion.
Matters cooled down after a while, and the election process resumed. A few vouched for a unanimous choice while others wanted elections, which created confusion again. Finally it was decided to choose the president by raising hands.
The post of the president for social justice standing committee was contested by Vajrakshi Shetty from BJP and Johnson Pinto from Congress.
BJP received 28 votes while Congress 18 votes. The 10 gram panchayat presidents also participated in the elections.
The election procedure was conducted by Rohitdas, CEO of taluk panchayat.
