Udupi, Oct 4: Ex-minster Vasanth V Salian inaugurated the programme on the ban of plastics in Kaup, which was jointly organized by Uliyaragoli gram panchayath, Kaup gram panchayath, Kaup JCI, Rotary Club and Lions’ Club, Kaup.

“All the gram panchayaths in Udupi need to ban plastic and hence, the union president Devi Prasad Shetty has to pressurise on this issue. The plastic ban implemented by the Uliyaragoli and Kapu gram panchayth is praiseworthy,” said Vasanth V Salian, after the inauguration.

“We are facing a lot of problems due to the use of plastic in our daily life. Our nature has been highly affected by the usage of plastic. I will take this matter seriously and see to it that plastic is banned in all the gram panchayaths of Udupi,” added the union president and Belapu gram panchayath president, Devi Prasad Shetty.

Kapu gram panchayath president, Yogish Rai, Uliyaragoli panchayath president, Arun Shetty, JCI president, Rakesh Kunjoor, Rotary president James D’Souza and Lions’ Club president, Rajesh Karkera were present among the others.

    Ban on plastics is welcome, since it is becoming a environmental hazard. However why not one can think of producing Biodegradable plastics as per article by Mr. Goldwin Fernandes [Published Date: September 7, 2012 Managlorean.com]. Hope this will be a remedial solution to consider. One has to look in this direction which is techno economically feasible. We have a number of patents available in US and some entrepreneur has to come forward with subsidy from State government on the concept to production.

    A ban will lead consumers to use paper bags instead. Although paper bags are made from a renewable resource and are biodegradable, their production generates more air and water pollution, and it takes more energy to manufacture and recycle them.
    Our state has more important and urgent issues to address rather banning convenient 100 percent recyclable products. Plastic bag recycling is a growing industry that can employee thousand, hence reducing the unemployment rate in state. The only thing government have to ensure that No one litters these plastic bags.. They need to create huge bins for disposal of plastic bags in various parts of city/town/ village and punish the people who do not abide.
