Udupi, Jun 2: Dr V Surendra Shetty, dean Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Mangalore has been redesignated pro vice-chancellor of Manipal University, Manipal. He takes charge in Mangalore on July 1, and will oversee the development of the campus there. Dr Dilip G Nayak will take over as the dean.
Dr Shetty is associated with the Manipal group since 1965 when he joined the first batch of students in the College of Dental Surgery Manipal. When the batch graduated in 1970, he was the best outgoing student and bagged the Dr TMA Pai Blue Ribbon Gold Medal. Incidentally, that year, he even bagged the state award for topping BDS in Mysore University.
He then worked as faculty for a short stint, before continuing to pursue his masters in orthodontics in the same institution. He joined as the student of the first batch of MDS in Orthodontics at the College of Dental Surgery Manipal in the year 1972. He went on to complete his MDS in the year 1974 following which he worked at KMC Mangalore and at the government Wenlock Hospital until 1987.
In 1987 January he was appointed as the director of the newly started Manipal College of dental sciences Mangalore the second dental college of the Manipal group. He has been heading the college as director/principal/dean over 25 years from its inception.
Dr Dilip G Nayak: Taking over from Dr V Surendra Shetty as dean of Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Mangalore will be Dr Dilip G Nayak, an alumnus of MCODS, Manipal. He obtained his BDS in 1983 and MDS in 1986. And is a founder staff of MCODS, Mangalore having joined in 1987.
In between, he had an eight-year stint with Al-Arab Medical University, Benghazi, Libya. After his return he was elevated to the post of Associate dean in 2000. He has undergone training in Oral Implantology at Germany. He was instrumental in the establishment of Melaka -Manipal Dental College at Malaysia. He was the National Vice president of Indian Society of Periodontology for two consecutive years.
