Udupi, May 21:
Subramanya Dhareshwar Yakshagana Bhagavata has announced his voluntary retirement from Ananth Padmanabha Peradooru Mela, here on Monday, May 21.

A function will be organized by Y Karunakar Shetty, manager of Peradooru Yakshgana Mela to felicitate Yakshagana master. The function will be inaugurated by Shyam Bhat (president Transport Dept, KA). The chief guest Shanadi Ajith Kumar Hegde (City development officer) and others will be present for the occasion.

Yakshagana, a cultural art of Dakshina Kannada, speaks about the life style of people. In the wake of western culture, it seems to have lost its supreme hold among the people, yet it resonates with the people of Tulunadu. This art is kept alive because of dedicated people like Subramanya Dhareshwar Yakshagana Bhagavata who dedicated his entire like for this cause.

Dhareshwar’s father was a priest by profession but had a great interest in Yakshagana and encouraged his son to learn the art. He even learnt Hindustani classical music and served as a playback singer for Shivalingeshwara Nataka Sangha and Bharathi Nataka Sangha.

However, it was the golden voice of the late Kalinga Navada who was an inspiration for Dhareshwar towards Yakshagana Bhagavathike.

He has nearly 40years of experience in the field of Yakshgana Bhagavathike. He initially served the Amritheshwara Mela and then joined the Perdoor Mela.

The function will also include Yakshagana and bhagavatha by Dhareshwar himself. His dedication and commitment in serving the society is remarkable.

“However, it was the golden voice of the late Kalinga Navada who was an inspiration for Dhareshwar towards Yakshagana Bhagavathike”.

It is wrong information in the article. According to my observation and knowledge…

Dhareshwara is senior than Navuda both in terms of profession and age. Both are learnt under Shree Narayanappa Uppoor at Amriteshwari Mela. Dhareshwara is 2nd level bhagavatha and he generally sings prior to Uppooru and Uppooru is pradhana (main) bhaghvatha. That time Navuda is junior and he is to sing only initial part of yakshagana called sangeetha (Ganapathi-stootra, balagopala and kodangi constitute the purva-ranga or preliminaries only). There is no point of inspiration to Dhareshwara by Navuda.

Later on both are come out with different pitch became stars… Off course both are very good friends.

Dhareshwara pulled Thousands of people especially yougsters towards yakshagana. 90s were his best days during which he released so many audio casstes. A true fan can ever forget the melody of his songs during last few decades. Fortunate enough to watch some of his best performances in bangalore as well. Hope he continues singing in old prasangas.

Era of Dhareshwara is remarkable. A rare personality has great “RANGA-TANTRIKATE”, quickly understands capacity/style of front artist (MUMMELA) performs accordingly. Who can perfectly sings old traditional ragas to today’s modern yakshagana styles. Best wishes to Dhareshwara’s retirement life.

For successful survival of Shree Perdooru Mela there is huge contribution by Dhareshwara. Perdooru-Dhareshwara is definitely joint name for Yakshagana lovers. While looking at the history directly or indirectly somewhat bhavathas holds power to lead the mela. For example: Navuda-Saligrama, Nebburu-Idagunji, Uppooru-Amriteshwari, Kadatoka-Dharmastala, Puttige-Dharmastala, Mandechcha-Karnataka, Ammannaya-Karnataka, Padyana-Suratkal etc. Long standing commitment by good bhaghavatha is defiantly big asset to any Mela.

My best wishes to Perdooru Mela to find the alternative.
