Rome, May 4 (IANS/AKI): A total of 180 forged paintings have been seized from several regions of Italy. A gang hoped to sell them to unsuspecting buyers for millions.
The forgeries included copies of works by renowned Italian artists like Amedeo Modigliani and Giacomo Balla.
The seizure was ordered by magistrates in Rovereto in northern Italy's Trentino region.
The magistrates said they were probing three people suspected of planning the sale of the forged paintings for around two million euros.
The raids, carried out in Trentino, Alto Adige, Lombardy, Veneto and Friuli Venezia, came after a year-long investigation of a suspected art forgery ring.
