Udupi, Mar 26: We have heard of pretentious 'doctors' and quacks who rip off unsuspecting patients, but here's a man who used the doctor's tag to cheat a poor taxi driver.
An unidentified person, claiming himself a ‘doctor’, hired a taxi from Ankola to Manipal and robbed the taxi driver of his valuables on reaching his destination and escaped.
‘Dr Rahul’ hired the taxi belonging to Nagaraj from Shirukuli in Ankola, saying that he had to conduct a surgery at a hospital in Manipal. They left to Manipal on March 19.
After having reached Manipal, Dr Rahul got himself settled at a lodge, here and got ready for his ‘operation’. He invited Nagaraj to join him as he would get an experience as to what an operation looks like! He also told Nagaraj to leave his belongings back in the room as they are not allowed to carry any valuables into the operation theatre.
Unsuspicious, Nagaraj left behind in the room his gold chain, finger ring (together weighing about 20 gms), two mobile phones and Rs 2,000 in cash in a bag. The two of them then left to the hospital. On reaching the hospital, the doctor said that he had to go and talk to a nurse regarding the surgery. He asked Nagaraj to wait for him.
Having said this, there was no sign of the ‘doctor’ for a long time. Suspecting foul play, Nagaraj went back to the hotel room only to his bag missing.
'Dr Rahul' is absconding. A case has been registered at the Manipal police station.
