Santos, May 2: In a spirited debut press conference, newly appointed Santos head coach Cleber Xavier brushed aside concerns about Neymar’s form and fitness, affirming the superstar’s invaluable role in the club’s plans — both on and off the field.

“Neymar is not a problem. Never, not once. He has always been a solution,” Xavier said firmly. The 33-year-old Brazil legend, who returned to his boyhood club in January from Saudi outfit Al-Hilal, has played only nine games due to lingering injuries. Despite this, he remains central to Xavier’s vision.

“Neymar played on the left for Barcelona and Brazil, but now he’s evolved. He’s more of an attacking midfielder — the bow and the arrow, as Tite used to say. He orchestrates and finishes,” Xavier explained.

Although Neymar has yet to return to full training, his presence continues to uplift the squad. “He brings joy to the locker room. Just by being here, he is participating. That’s the kind of unity I want to instill,” said the former Brazil assistant coach, who worked closely with Neymar for over six years.

The Santos talisman, who has scored three goals and assisted three more since his comeback, has pledged full commitment to the club’s cause. “He is happy to be here and his teammates are happy to be with him,” Xavier added.

Santos currently languishes in 19th place in the Brazilian Serie A with just one win from six games. Xavier’s first test comes this Sunday against Gremio — a crucial fixture that could mark the start of the club’s resurgence.
