New Delhi, May 2: Northern India was gripped by a wave of inclement weather on Friday as heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds swept across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi, causing widespread disruption and tragic loss of life.

Early morning downpours brought temperatures tumbling in Punjab and Haryana, even as Thursday night’s thunderstorms uprooted trees and damaged property in multiple areas.

In Delhi, intense rainfall and squally winds severely impacted daily life. Indira Gandhi International Airport witnessed delays and disruptions, with the Delhi International Airport Limited confirming that multiple flights were affected due to the adverse weather conditions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) responded by issuing a red alert for the capital, citing the severity of the storm. Waterlogging and uprooted trees were reported in several parts of the city, adding to commuter woes.

Amid the chaos, tragedy struck in Delhi’s Najafgarh area where a house collapsed due to the rain and storm, claiming the lives of four people. Emergency teams rushed to the site for rescue operations, but the intensity of the collapse left little chance for survival.

Authorities have urged residents to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel as cleanup and relief operations continue across the affected regions.
