Tehran, Apr 16: Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi reiterated on Wednesday that the principle of his country's uranium enrichment is non-negotiable, despite recent contradictory statements from US officials. Speaking to reporters after a cabinet meeting, Araghchi emphasized that Iran’s uranium enrichment is a ‘real, accepted, and undeniable fact’ and expressed Iran's willingness to address any concerns. However, he made it clear that the core principle of enrichment itself cannot be compromised.
Araghchi’s comments followed the first round of indirect talks between Tehran and Washington in Oman last week, where US Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, made conflicting statements on Iran's nuclear program. While Witkoff previously suggested that low-level uranium enrichment could be permitted, he later stated that Iran must “stop and eliminate” its nuclear enrichment programme to reach a deal.

Araghchi criticized these contradictory US positions, stressing that such inconsistency would not contribute to successful negotiations. He added that if talks are conducted on an equal footing and in a respectful manner, there is hope for a meaningful agreement. However, he warned that pressuring Iran would not yield productive results.
The second round of indirect talks between Araghchi and Witkoff is scheduled for Saturday. The discussions are expected to focus on Iran’s nuclear programme and the potential removal of US sanctions.
