Mangaluru, Apr 15: Tourism in Dakshina Kannada (DK) is witnessing a significant revival, attracting a growing number of foreign visitors. Compared to 2023, the number of foreign tourists visiting the region has tripled in 2024. The primary attractions drawing international travellers to Coastal Karnataka are its ancient temples and pristine beaches.

Among the most visited spots, beaches in Surathkal have seen a particularly high influx of foreign tourists. With over six beaches in the vicinity, the region has become a preferred destination. Additionally, places like Moodbidri, Pilikula, and Dharmasthala are also attracting a considerable number of visitors.

According to data from the Dakshina Kannada tourism department, 3,818 foreign tourists visited the coastal district in 2023. In 2024, this number surged to 10,778, marking a threefold increase.

"Tourists from various countries visit this region primarily for its pristine beaches and historic temples. The tourism department has identified 38 key destinations for both domestic and international travellers, out of which 14 locations frequently receive foreign visitors," said a coastal tourism guide.

"Temples and eco-tourism play a major role in attracting foreign tourists. Previously, many international travellers prioritized Goa, but now they are exploring South Indian destinations like Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Kodagu, and Kerala," stated Dilip Kumar, Deputy Director of the Dakshina Kannada Tourism Department.

The Mangaluru International Airport’s proximity to tourist hotspots is another factor contributing to the rise in foreign visitors. "Many tourists traveling to Kodagu or Kerala make a stopover in Dakshina Kannada for a day before continuing their journey. The spiritual appeal of the region draws them to ancient temples in Udupi and other areas, followed by visits to beaches and scenic spots," said Mangaluru-based hotel entrepreneur Ravi Kiran.

Foreign tourists frequently visit destinations such as Surathkal, Panambur, Ullal, Someshwar, Kateel, Moodbidri, Tannirbhavi, Pilikula, Sasihithlu Beach, the Postal Card Collection Center in Pandeshwar, Kukke Subrahmanya Temple, Dharmasthala, and Venoor.

Apart from the surge in foreign visitors, Dakshina Kannada has also seen a remarkable increase in domestic tourism. As per tourism department data, 32,852,907 domestic tourists visited the district in 2023. This number soared to 50,621,478 in 2024. While temples and beaches remain the primary attractions, other destinations such as Ermai and Didupe waterfalls are also drawing a growing number of visitors.

I go on cruises almost every year mostly in the gulf of mexico or the caribbean. From my experience , I feel that there is a lot to offer in mangalore if it is planned properly. We have tannirbhavi closeby and it could have a shopping village of indian artifacts and cheap trinkets and also a food experience with local toddy and beverages. We have surfing in tannirbahavi and this could be also be an attraction for the short duration that the ship docks at the port. Currently I find the cruisers buying trinkets at the shop in the port at exhorbitant rates or going to mangalore to explore the city and facing harassment by the autorickshaw drivers.

Not clear how much foreign exchange revenue happening -- cruise ships as in captioned photo is like a pit stop -- hurried photo ops -- we need high end tourists who bring in valuable foreign exchange along with exchange of cultures - long duration stays -- - good practices - - (not hippie culture -- mostly on shoestring budget with all the negatives of lifestyle --) but for this lot of efforts needed to make tourists come here -- cleanliness - quality rooms at reasonable prices --- not getting hassled / harassed by locals-- taxis etc. - cheating etc -- good rest rooms --
