Hyderabad, Apr 10: Former Bodhan MLA and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader Shakeel Aamir was briefly detained by authorities at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport upon his arrival from Dubai, police officials confirmed. The detention was linked to a lookout circular issued in February 2024 in connection with a road accident case involving his son, Raheel Aamir, also known as Sahel.

Shakeel Aamir had returned to the city to attend his mother’s funeral, who passed away after a prolonged illness. Police allowed the former legislator to proceed for the last rites and stated that he may be questioned further in connection with the case.

The controversy stems from a high-profile incident on December 24, 2023, when a BMW, allegedly driven by Sahel, crashed into security barricades outside Praja Bhavan—the official residence of Telangana’s Deputy Chief Minister. Although no injuries were reported, the car and barricades sustained damage. The occupants fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle.

Shortly after, a man appeared to claim ownership of the vehicle and took the blame for the crash. A case of rash and negligent driving was registered against him. However, during the investigation, police found evidence indicating that Sahel was behind the wheel. He had reportedly been helped by his father to flee police custody and escape to Dubai, while an employee of the former MLA was falsely implicated.

The unfolding scandal led to the booking of 16 individuals, including police inspectors from Panjagutta and Bodhan, who allegedly facilitated the cover-up.

Sahel was arrested on March 8, 2024, after returning to India. Further digging into his past brought another grave incident to light. On February 17, 2022, a car allegedly driven by Sahel struck a woman carrying her two-month-old baby. The infant tragically died, and three others were injured. Similar to the 2023 incident, the occupants fled, and another individual—Syed Afnan Ahmed—came forward claiming responsibility, stating Sahel and another friend, Mohammed Maaz, were passengers in the vehicle.

After the latest revelations, authorities reopened the 2022 case and initiated a fresh probe into both incidents.

Shakeel Aamir's role in allegedly shielding his son and obstructing justice remains under scrutiny as investigations continue.
