Gaza, Apr 9: At least 29 Palestinians were killed and over 50 injured in an Israeli airstrike that flattened a residential block in the Shuja'iyya neighbourhood, east of Gaza City, on Wednesday, according to Hamas officials.

Mahmoud Basal, spokesperson for Gaza Civil Defence, said that rescue operations were underway, with teams searching for survivors and bodies buried under the rubble. The targeted strike reportedly hit eight adjacent homes, completely razing the area.

The Israeli military has yet to comment on the incident.

Health authorities in Gaza stated that hospitals have received 36 bodies and 41 wounded individuals in the past 24 hours alone. Since the resumption of Israeli military operations on March 18, at least 1,482 Palestinians have been killed and 3,688 injured.

In a separate incident in Nuseirat, central Gaza, two people were killed and one injured in another Israeli strike. Meanwhile, in Khan Younis, an elderly man and a woman were reportedly killed in an attack on a makeshift tent sheltering displaced civilians.

Emergency responders continue to face difficulty accessing several victims due to ongoing fighting and security concerns.

Just last week, on April 3, another Israeli strike on Dar Al-Arqam school which was housing displaced families left at least 29 dead, including women, children, and elderly, and injured over 100, according to the Hamas-run Gaza media office. The school was reportedly hit by three missiles.

Since the conflict erupted on October 7, 2023, the death toll in Gaza has soared to 50,846, with over 115,729 people injured, as per Gaza health authorities.
