Xabi Alonso tipped to replace Ancelotti as real Madrid eyes new era

Madrid, Apr 9: Speculation over Carlo Ancelotti’s future at Real Madrid has intensified, with reports indicating that the Italian coach could part ways with the club at the end of the current season. According to Spanish outlet Relevo, Ancelotti’s position is set to be reviewed unless he orchestrates a dramatic turnaround in the coming weeks.

Amid growing uncertainty, former Real Madrid midfielder and current Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso has emerged as the frontrunner to take charge. Alonso’s stock has risen sharply after he guided Leverkusen to their first-ever Bundesliga title in the 2023–24 season, ending Bayern Munich’s 11-year dominance with an unbeaten campaign.

Despite a high-profile signing in Kylian Mbappe and a formidable attacking line-up, Real Madrid have struggled to find consistent form. Their 0-3 defeat to Arsenal in the Champions League quarterfinal first leg has only added to the pressure on Ancelotti.

Addressing media before the game, Ancelotti said he still enjoyed the full support of club president Florentino Perez. “The most important person is happy with me, and that’s what matters,” he said.

However, recent results paint a challenging picture. Real have suffered heavy defeats to arch-rivals FC Barcelona—0-4 in La Liga and 2-5 in the Supercopa de España final. They currently trail the Catalan side by four points in the league and are also set to meet them again in the Copa del Rey final later this month.

With mounting pressure and a trophyless season looming, Real Madrid could be on the brink of change. Yet, if there’s any team capable of bouncing back from a three-goal deficit in Europe, it’s Los Blancos. They have a history of overturning such margins and will hope to repeat that feat in the second leg against Arsenal at the Santiago Bernabeu next week.

For now, all eyes remain on the iconic Spanish side as they balance between revival and transition—possibly under the leadership of a familiar face in Xabi Alonso.
