AI-generated Ghibli art used to lure victims, warns TN cybercrime wing

Chennai, Apr 9: The Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Wing has issued a stern public advisory against the growing misuse of AI-generated Ghibli-style artwork, warning citizens that cybercriminals are now using such tools as a front for data theft and online fraud.

Officials revealed that a rising number of people are unknowingly compromising their personal data by uploading selfies to platforms that offer animated transformations in the style of Studio Ghibli’s iconic visuals. While these applications may seem like harmless entertainment, authorities caution that they can pose serious risks to privacy and cybersecurity.

“People often fail to realise the magnitude of the risk involved,” a Cyber Crime Wing official stated, adding that these AI platforms often harvest users' biometric data, such as facial features, without informed consent. Once uploaded, users typically relinquish control over how their images are stored or used, making them vulnerable to deepfakes and synthetic media manipulation.

Experts have also flagged the proliferation of unofficial websites offering free Ghibli-style artworks or custom animations. Many of these portals reportedly serve as bait for phishing scams, malware deployment, and even ransomware attacks. Victims have reported incidents of identity theft and unauthorised access to their digital wallets and online accounts.

A particularly alarming trend involves fake contests and giveaways featuring Ghibli-themed visuals, which lure users into clicking malicious links or submitting sensitive financial information.

The Cyber Crime Wing has urged the public to avoid uploading personal photos to unverified AI platforms and to steer clear of suspicious links or downloads. Citizens are also advised to keep their devices protected with updated security software and to report any suspicious activity immediately.

The department has announced plans to roll out awareness campaigns to educate people on emerging cyber threats and the deceptive tactics employed by criminals in the digital age.
