Mamata slams centre over Waqf Act, vows to protect minority rights

Kolkata, Apr 9: In a sharp critique aimed at the Union government, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday condemned the newly promulgated Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, calling it an “attempt to snatch others’ property”.

Addressing a gathering during the Vishwa Navkar Mahamantra Divas in Kolkata, the Chief Minister made it clear that such a move would not be tolerated in the state. “Just as no one has the right to snatch my property, similarly, I too do not have the right to snatch others’ property. In West Bengal, I will never allow that,” she asserted.

CM Banerjee reaffirmed her government’s commitment to safeguarding the interests and properties of minority communities, stating that nearly 33 per cent of West Bengal’s population belongs to minority communities. “Always remember that your Didi is there to protect you and your property. Our mission should be – ‘Jio Aur Jine Do (Live and let live),’” she said.

Her remarks come in the backdrop of growing tension in Jangipur, Murshidabad district, where violence has erupted over the Waqf (Amendment) Act.

Without naming the BJP or the Union government directly, the Chief Minister criticised the “politics of division”, warning that such tactics could damage the country’s unity and economy.

“Attempts to divide people will ruin the future of the country. It will weaken the country. The country will get stronger only if the path of unity is followed,” she said.

Calling upon the people of Bengal to rise above divisions, Mamata Banerjee declared, “We will have to fight for the sake of unity. Even if I am shot, I will not distract from the path of unity.”
