Mumbai, Apr 16: Maharashtra's Minister of Marketing Jaykumar Rawal on Wednesday emphasized that the State Cooperative Marketing Federation (SCMF) has a vital responsibility in providing relief to farmers by ensuring the purchase of agricultural produce across the state.
Highlighting the need for modernization and professional functioning, Rawal said, “The Federation should work with a positive mindset and professional approach to regain its former glory and improve its financial health.”
He directed that a proposal be sent to the state government for necessary recruitment, noting that out of 511 sanctioned posts, only 104 are currently active. He also stressed the importance of aligning the Federation’s objectives with present-day agricultural and economic realities.
Established in 1958, the SCMF should act as a bridge between the state government and taluka-level purchase and sale associations, Rawal said. “These associations should be united and confidence must be instilled among them,” he added.
Rawal urged the Federation to study successful models from other states and invite them to market Maharashtra’s produce, thereby boosting business potential. He called for maximum procurement through the Federation and affiliated associations, and suggested exploring central government schemes for new business opportunities.
To enhance the Federation’s financial standing, Rawal proposed that unused assets be rented out and the body take an active role in facilitating weekly markets. He also stressed on collaboration with the Marketing Corporation and Warehousing Corporation for better asset utilisation.
SCMF MD Shridhar Dube Patil pointed out that repair of warehouses and properties was urgently needed. He also noted that Maharashtra had record procurement of soybeans this year, maintaining its position as a national leader in procurement.
The minister’s directives come at a time when strengthening cooperative institutions is seen as key to safeguarding farmer incomes and market stability in the state.
