Tariff tensions: Elon Musk reportedly urges Trump to roll back import duties amid economic concerns

Washington, Apr 8: In what is being described as a rare moment of divergence between two influential figures, Tesla CEO Elon Musk is reported to have made direct appeals to US President Donald Trump to reconsider and roll back the newly imposed tariffs on imports. However, according to a report by the Washington Post, these appeals were unsuccessful.

The disagreement, which unfolded over the weekend, highlights growing concerns in the business community following Trump’s announcement of a 10% baseline tariff on all imports into the United States, alongside higher duties targeting specific countries. The move has triggered widespread debate on its potential implications for trade, inflation, and economic stability.

Though there was no official response from either the White House or Elon Musk, sources familiar with the matter confirmed that the Tesla chief raised his objections during a virtual address at a congress hosted by Italy's right-wing League Party. During the event, Musk advocated for a zero-tariff framework between the US and Europe, emphasizing the need for free and fair trade.

Tesla, which has recently experienced a sharp dip in quarterly sales, appears to be feeling the heat. The electric vehicle giant’s shares were trading at $233.29 as of Monday’s close—down over 42% since the start of 2025. The economic downturn has been partially attributed to public skepticism surrounding Musk’s recent involvement in the newly established US “Department of Government Efficiency,” aimed at eliminating unnecessary government expenditure.

Economists have voiced concern that the sweeping tariff measures could fuel inflation, edge the economy toward a recession, and burden American households with significantly higher costs. Such developments could pose political risks for President Trump, who has long pledged to reduce the cost of living for everyday Americans.

While Musk and Trump have previously shared a cordial relationship—with Musk even advising the President on public spending reforms—this episode marks a pivotal shift, underscoring the complex balance between policy, business, and public sentiment in an election year.
