Puttur, Mar 28: Balli Ayur Grama, a unique sanctuary of authentic ayurvedic wellness nestled in Uppinangady, has emerged as a vibrant hub not only for holistic healing but also for education, research, and cultural enrichment. Surrounded by a biodiversity farm, this serene retreat has recently gained recognition as a study center for ayurvedic medical students and plant researchers while also captivating literature and art enthusiasts with its latest additions.
A group of students from the prestigious Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (ITRA) in Jamnagar recently visited Balli Ayur Grama for their studies. The wellness center was praised for its remarkable efforts in identifying and tagging over 800 species of trees, transforming it into a living laboratory for botanical and ayurvedic research. This visit further solidified Balli Ayur Grama’s growing reputation as a destination for hands-on learning in traditional medicine and nature conservation.

Enhancing its appeal, Balli Ayur Grama recently upgraded its facilities with the inauguration of a new amphitheatre during the ITRA students’ visit. The facility was officially inaugurated by Dr Smitha Hegde, a renowned expert in phytoremediation, who lit the ceremonial lamp. She was joined by Dr Supreeth (BAMS, PhD), Dr Shyni, and members of the Balli family. The amphitheatre is set to host various cultural activities, including book releases, poetry sessions, and classical dance performances, enriching the experience for visitors.
During the inauguration, Dr Smitha Hegde lauded the Balli family’s dedication to nature, describing the wellness center as a ‘divine place’ that offers a healing environment to all who enter. “Without nature, humans cannot thrive or even survive. Returning to nature is essential,” she emphasized. Highlighting her close association with Balli Ayur Grama’s projects, Dr Hegde also launched the innovative Geo Mapping App, developed exclusively for the center. This app provides detailed information and precise locations of trees across the property, enhancing the educational and exploratory experience for students, researchers, and visitors alike.
Dr Supreeth, founder and chief physician at Balli Ayur Grama, reiterated the center’s commitment to welcoming research students and nature lovers. “We encourage couples, families, and even children to check in together, as it helps alleviate the stress of being apart from loved ones,” he said. The spacious rooms and facilities are designed to accommodate families comfortably, with activities tailored to promote a healthy lifestyle, including a strictly vegetarian menu. The vast biodiversity farm, serving as a private backyard, offers a safe and tranquil space for walking and reflection—an ideal setting for children and adults to embark on an inward journey.
Architecturally, Balli Ayur Grama stands out with its traditional ‘Chathushala’ design—a four-quarter structure surrounding a central courtyard—built over eight years using eco-friendly materials and principles of Vaastu Shastra. The center features seven suite rooms, eight double rooms, and five single rooms across four floors, accommodating up to 21 patients at a time. Treatment costs vary depending on the ailment, its duration, and the required stay, which is assessed after a physical examination.
Balli Ayur Grama’s dedication to sustainability and organic practices has not gone unnoticed. In 2020-21, the center was honoured with the Best Organic Farmer Award by the department of agriculture, government of Karnataka, recognizing its contributions to eco-conscious living and farming.
