Jammu, Mar 13: Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to promoting religious and tourist destinations across Srinagar to enhance tourism and attract more visitors to the region.
Speaking in the Assembly, Abdullah emphasized the significance of Srinagar’s historic landmarks, including Dal Lake, Nishat, Shalimar, Chashmashahi, Pari Mahal, as well as revered shrines, temples, and gurudwaras. "These places define the uniqueness of Srinagar, and we are dedicated to promoting them on a broader scale," he stated while responding to a query from NC member Ali Mohammad Sagar regarding the role of tourism in J&K’s economy.
Tourism, a key pillar of the region’s economy, significantly contributes to Jammu & Kashmir’s GDP and employment generation. The Chief Minister highlighted that the sector provides direct and indirect livelihood opportunities to thousands, including hotel staff, tour operators, taxi drivers, souvenir vendors, and local youth.

To further boost tourism, Abdullah outlined plans to diversify the sector by promoting adventure tourism, MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism, golf tourism, eco-tourism, pilgrimage tourism, as well as cultural and heritage tourism. "This strategic diversification aims to attract a broader spectrum of visitors to the region," he noted.
The government is actively advertising J&K’s top tourist destinations on national and international platforms while also working on the development of lesser-explored locations. "We are focusing on expanding tourism beyond traditional hotspots by developing offbeat destinations such as Gurez, Keran, Bungus, Tosamaidan, Aharbal, Doodhpathri, Machail, Bhaderwah, Sukrala Mata, and Pancheri," Abdullah added.
The tourism sector in J&K has seen remarkable growth, with visitor numbers rising significantly in recent years. In 2023, the region welcomed 2,11,80,011 tourists, while in 2024, this number increased to 2,35,90,081, showcasing the success of the government’s initiatives.
Additionally, the Tourism Department has been actively strengthening infrastructure. Over the last three years, several tourism-related projects have been launched:
• 2022-23: 984 projects initiated, 549 completed.
• 2023-24: 1,191 projects launched, 516 completed.
• 2024-25 (till date): 1,914 projects started, with 1,057 already completed.
"Our priority remains the development of tourism infrastructure, enhancing visitor experience, and ensuring sustained growth for the sector," Abdullah concluded.
