Mumbai, Feb 28: In a ray of hope for the family of Nilam Shinde, the United States has granted an emergency visa to her relatives after relentless efforts from both the Indian government and her loved ones. Nilam, a 35-year-old student at California State University, remains in a coma following a devastating hit-and-run accident in California on February 14.
Her family received news of the accident two days later, on February 16, and had been struggling to secure a visa to be by her side. Following political intervention, including support from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the US Consulate in Mumbai scheduled an emergency visa interview at 9 am on Friday.
“We have finally received the visa. Several political leaders helped us secure it. I will be accompanying Nilam’s father to the US, and we are leaving tomorrow,” her cousin Gaurav Kadam told ANI.
Doctors remain cautiously optimistic about her recovery. Nilam suffered multiple fractures in both arms and legs and had to undergo emergency brain surgery.
Meanwhile, authorities in San Francisco have arrested the accused driver responsible for the hit-and-run incident. Further investigations are underway.
