AAP's Sanjay Singh raises concerns over Kumbh Stampede and Ammonia crisis in Yamuna in Rajya Sabha

New Delhi, Feb 4: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Member of Parliament Sanjay Singh has submitted two significant notices to the Rajya Sabha, addressing the tragic Maha Kumbh stampede and the escalating ammonia levels in the Yamuna River, both of which have raised serious concerns.

In his first notice, Singh highlighted the devastating stampede that occurred during the Maha Kumbh on January 29. He pointed out that this marks the sixth such tragedy in the past 70 years, attributing the incident to gross mismanagement by the Yogi Adityanath-led government in Uttar Pradesh. Despite the government spending over Rs 10,000 crore on event arrangements, Singh criticized the glaring inequality in resource distribution. He noted that while luxury cottages, private Ganga bathing areas, and round-the-clock control rooms were provided for VIPs and VVIPs, ordinary devotees faced severe congestion on bridges and were restricted by numerous barricades.

Singh questioned whether the Rs 55,000 fee charged for VIP passes reflected the value of the lives lost in the stampede. He accused the government of complete administrative failure and requested permission from the Speaker to discuss this critical issue during Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha.

In his second notice, Singh brought attention to the alarming rise in ammonia levels in the Yamuna River, which has led to a severe water crisis in Delhi. The ammonia concentration has reportedly surged beyond 7 parts per million (ppm), a level highly toxic for human consumption. As a result, the production capacity of the Wazirabad Water Purification Plant has been significantly reduced, exacerbating Delhi’s water woes.

Singh claimed that while Delhi receives potable water from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, the water supplied by Haryana has shown an alarming increase in ammonia content, surpassing safe treatable limits by 700 per cent. He attributed this spike to the indiscriminate discharge of untreated sewage and industrial waste into the river, which has rendered Delhi's water treatment plants ineffective. This contamination has led to a reduction of 15 to 20 per cent in water supply, impacting nearly 34 lakh residents of Delhi.

Further accusing the Haryana government, Singh alleged a deliberate attempt to malign the Delhi government by allowing the discharge of industrial pollutants—such as fertilizers, dyes, plastics, and decayed organic matter—into the Yamuna. This, he claimed, has significantly worsened the water quality, posing a grave threat to public health.

Singh urged the central government to take immediate action to address both the Kumbh tragedy and the Yamuna water crisis, emphasizing the urgent need for accountability and sustainable solutions.
