Chennai, Jan 9: Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin has launched the distribution of Pongal gift hampers, benefiting 2.2 cr ration cardholders. The hampers include raw rice, sugar, tamarind, sugarcane, Rs 1,000 in cash, and 21 essential festival items.
Distribution runs from January 9 to 13, 2025, with plans to transfer cash directly to bank accounts or via tokens if needed.
The government has allocated Rs 100 crore for 1.77 crore dhotis and sarees, benefiting 63,000 power looms. Special buses and inspections have been arranged to accommodate and safeguard holiday travelers.
Pongal holidays are from January 14 to 16, creating a six-day festive break.
