Kundapur, Jan 8: In a tragic incident on January 4, a fishing boat on its way for repair from Malpe harbour suffered significant damage after colliding with a massive wooden log near Alve in Gangolli, causing the boat to partially sink and incurring an estimated loss of Rs 65 lac.
The fishing boat, named 'Thawakkal’, owned by Sanjat, was being taken for repair from Malpe harbour to Gangolli by fishermen Ravi Salian and Harish at around 5:30 pm. At about 7:30 pm, while sailing 2 nautical miles away from Alve in Gangolli, a large wooden log collided with the boat.
The impact caused severe damage to the boat's bottom at the front, leading to water ingress. Realizing the imminent danger of the boat sinking, helmsman Ravi Salian contacted Gangolli-based boat repairer Pundalika Harate for assistance.
Pundalika promptly sent another boat named 'Jalarani' to rescue the fishermen. The Jalarani crew successfully saved Ravi Salian and Harish and secured the sinking boat with ropes before towing it to Gangolli.
The boat sustained extensive damage, and the estimated loss is pegged at Rs 65 lac.
