Udupi, Dec 18: Malpe beach, a premier tourist destination in coastal Karnataka, has witnessed an influx of visitors as the vacation season picks up pace. Among these are a significant number of student tourists, whose visits have raised concerns over increased incidents of drowning in neighbouring coastal regions. This has highlighted the urgent need for enhanced safety measures to protect visitors.

The rising death toll from drowning in adjacent areas is largely attributed to negligence and insufficient safety provisions. To prevent similar tragedies at Malpe beach, authorities have been urged to deploy more lifeguards, equip rescue stations with advanced tools and boats, and position safety officers at critical points along the beach. Additionally, clear signage and updated safety guidelines are essential to educate and alert tourists.

Tourists are strongly advised to exercise caution while entering the sea. Avoiding deep waters, refraining from swimming during high tides, and adhering to lifeguards' instructions are crucial to ensuring personal safety.

Particular attention is being directed at school groups, which often visit in large numbers. Teachers and supervisors have been urged to closely monitor students and enforce strict safety regulations during these excursions.

Social worker Eshwar Malpe emphasized the importance of both individual and institutional responsibility, stating, “Everyone remembers the recent tragedy in Murudeshwar. With the increase in tourists at Malpe, we must ensure such incidents are not repeated. We have advised several schools to strictly forbid students from venturing into deep waters, restricting them to knee-level at most. Tragically, negligence continues to lead to preventable drowning, causing immense sorrow to families. Our team is actively working to raise awareness about these dangers. Despite warnings from lifeguards, KND personnel, police, and locals, many tourists ignore safety instructions, leading to fatal accidents. Those staying in nearby resorts or homestays are especially prone to reckless behaviour in the sea. I urge everyone to prioritize safety and exercise caution when entering the water.”

With stricter safety measures and increased awareness, Malpe Beach can remain a lively yet secure destination for tourists and locals alike.
