Udupi, Dec 20: Under the aegis of Our Lady of Health parish, Shirva, and Catholic Sabha Mangalore Pradesh ®, a friendly Christmas meet was held in Shirva town recently.

Speaking on the occasion, Shahnaz M, editor, Kannada women’s monthly magazine ‘Anupama’, said that there have been several attempts by communal forces to create disharmony in the society that has people of diverse culture and religions, caste, and creed, who co-existed peacefully in the past.

“Urbanization takes a toll on human virtues, with disregard for fellowmen.  An open discussion among people of different faiths should be held to clear the mistrust and misunderstanding in the society.  Social concern should take precedence over hatred between communities,” she added.

Swami Esha Vittaldas, Kemaru Mutt, said that despite the ancestors of the coastal district lacking education, their thoughts were pro-societal.  “Traditions and culture are facing extinction due to advancements in science. Corruption is not restricted to politics and administration, it is thriving in social, spiritual, and general administration.  The MNCs are likely to destabilize secure living in Tulunadu, and hence the need to stage struggle disregarding caste, creed, and religion,” he added.

Shirva parish priest Stany Tauro delivered the Christmas message to the gathering.

A harmonious procession was held from Shirva parish to Shirva town ahead of the stage programme.

Catholic Sabha Mangalore Pradesh ® president Walter Pinto, Shirva parish unit president Peter Mathias, secretary Leena Machado, co-ordinator Melvyn Aranha, Shirva parish council vice president Arvin D’Souza, ZP member Ida D’Souza, Gladys D’Almeida, and Agnes Barboza were present on the occasion.
