Bengaluru, Dec 10: Former Karnataka chief minister and union external affairs minister S M Krishna passed away today at the age of 91. He had been battling age-related ailments and was admitted to a private hospital in Bengaluru. Despite receiving intensive medical care, he breathed his last earlier on Tuesday December 10.

Initially, SM Krishna was admitted to Vydehi Hospital for treatment of age-related health issues. However, after developing a lung infection, he was shifted to Manipal Hospital, where a team of doctors led by Dr Satyanarayana Mysore and Dr Sunil Karanth provided specialized care.

SM Krishna served as the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from December 1989 to January 1993. Between 1971 and 2014, he was a member of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha during different periods of his illustrious political career.

In March 2017, S M Krishna, who had been a prominent leader in the Congress party for several decades, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He actively participated in the 2018 Karnataka Assembly election campaign before retiring from active politics.

A man of academic excellence, S M Krishna completed his undergraduate studies at Maharaja's College in Mysuru and pursued law at the Government Law College in Bengaluru. He furthered his education in the United States, earning a degree from Southern Methodist University in Texas. He was also a recipient of the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship, which he used to study at George Washington University in Washington, DC.

During a visit to Maddur in August 2021, SM Krishna reflected on his decision to step away from politics, citing age and health concerns. He remarked, "I have been in politics for over 55 years. At my age, it is no longer feasible to continue in active politics."

Notably, SM Krishna inaugurated the Mysuru Dasara festivities in 2021, underscoring his enduring connection with Karnataka’s cultural heritage.

Undoubtedly Mr. SMK was a great, educated, efficient politician. But, instead of retiring from politics in a dignified way, he bowed down in front of BJP for his personal gains & lost "Gentleman Politician" tag. Still, Karnataka will remember his role in making our state, worlds IT Hub / Silicon valley.

True I had a profound esteem and admiration as long as he adorned the Poitical Career posts. But when he spurned the party through which he became a well known politician, I got a shock and dejection. When his Son-in Law met a tragic end I felt very sorry, that Mr S.M shouldn't have been exposed to this untimely tragedy. Now all History. May his soul rest in Peace.

As a politician whatever he gained was because of congress. I feel he should not have crossed over to BJP while he was on the edge of retirement from active politis. He has been honoured with the post of chief minister, external affairs Minister and even governor of Maharashtra. He could have gained more respect and remained in Kannadigas hearts had he remained in Congress. Any how I feel sad we have lost a great leader. Only politicians can justify their course of actions.

Whenever a politician dies varied opinions are aired... Few possibly true few from imaginary pockets... But we must see the brighter part of his achievements rather than normal human shortcomings... He had his life, fame, wealth and also a fair share of sorrows... RIP to the departed soul...

Today's bangalore is because of his vision. I remember him declaring that he will make bangalore like Singapore in 1998. Of course, it did not turn out great, but still bangalore today is a source of opportunity for thousands of all walks of life

He is dynamic leader, a wonderful chief minister of Karnataka. I am proud of him as he who is the pillar of Bangalore's it development. Today because of him Bangalore became a a growing up city in specially in IT Sector. Once upon a time people used tonout of Karnataka seeking for a job. Now people are coming to Bangalore for seeking a seeking a job from all over India. Students are taking computer engineering and other computer based courses. Only I am sad about after serving Congress for long , long time he joined BJP at his fag end of his life. He couldn't do anything as he was not healthy. Jai Karnataka, Jai Bharat

Joining BJP in 2017 was the start of the downfall of his political career as BJP did not gave him any political post unlike Congress where he was at the top of his political career. Neverthless,he was a non corrupt politician. Om Shanthi
