Kasargod: Lifer, fine for first accused in Cong leader's 2008 Kuntaru Balan case

Kasargod, Nov 27: The prime accused in the 2008 murder of Congress leader Kuntaru Balan has been sentenced to life imprisonment and fined Rs 2 lac. The additional sessions court has ordered that the fine be paid to Balan's family.

The other accused — Kattath Bail Vijayen (42), Kuntaru K Kumaran (51), and Athnadiy Dilip Kumar (41) — were acquitted by the court.

Balan was murdered on the night of March 27, 2008, when the accused stopped his car near the Kuntaru bus stand, where he was dragged out and killed.

While the initial police investigation remained stalled, protests from Balan's family led to the case being transferred to the Crime Branch.
