Mangalore, Dec 15: Dr Sadhan K Gosh, chairman, International Conference on Solid Waste Management (IconSWM), has appreciated the administration of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) in solid waste management and congratulated the citizens and administrative body of the MCC at a press meet on Wednesday December 14.
Addressing media persons in the Mayor’s chamber, Dr Gosh explained that the MCC has been placed first in the ‘IconSWM 2011’, an excellence award on the international level, in solid waste management and city planning and cleanliness.
“MCC has many good roads in concrete and comfortable sanitary lands. They have installed a bio gas plant, compost plants, and many other new initiatives with respect to solid waste management. Even in the year 2009, MCC received second position in IconSWM,” said Dr Ghosh.
“Infrastructure for compost plant and sanitary landfill site have been developed with the association of KUDCEMP at a cost of Rs 6.48 crore and Rs 9.39 crore respectively, with ADB loans. The window composting plant and vermi-composting plant have been operational from 2008 and the landfill site has been operational since 2010,” he added.
He said that the future development programmes are as follows:
-100% door-to-door collection to be implemented with stress on source segregation
-Hydraulically-operated vehicles to be used for primary and secondary transportation
-GPS to be installed in secondary transportation vehicles
-Mechanized street sweeping
-Avail facilities of carbon credit from O&M for sanitary landfill and compost plant
“IconSWM has been working for the last couple of years in the area of solid waste management throughout the country for environment protection. The second international conference and exhibition on solid waste management, municipal services, urban development, public works, and clean technology (IconSWM-2011), with the support of Government of India and Government of West Bengal, was held from November 9 to 11, 2011, at Jadavapur University, Kolkata,” said Dr Ghosh.
“The next conference will be held in Mysore (Karnataka), and prizes will be awarded to selected corporations. The prizes will comprise of citation and memento,” he said and thanked the citizens and administrators of Mangalore for being responsibile and for their services.
In this meet, Mayor Praveen, deputy mayor Geetha Nayak, MCC commissioner Harishkumar K, former mayor, and many corporators were also present.
