Shaktinagar, Nov 5: “Just as we respect our mother and homeland, we must nurture our mother tongue. The growth of Konkani literature has been driven by its speakers, and the responsibility of preserving and enriching it lies with the younger generation,” said Michael D'Souza, a non-resident entrepreneur. He was speaking at the finals of the Konkani poetry presentation competition held on Tuesday at the World Konkani Centre in Shaktinagar.
The event was organized in collaboration with the World Konkani Centre, Konkani Natak Sabha, and Konkani Bhasha Mandal. Addressing the audience, D'Souza emphasized that the genuine appreciation children, youth, and parents show for Konkani literature amidst the rising allure of Western languages is a testament to the respect the language receives. He urged that such efforts must continue.
Senior poet and Kavita Trust founder, Melvyn Rodrigues, highlighted the success of the competition, stating, “Thanks to the support of Konkani enthusiasts, we have completed 13 editions of this poetry contest. Approximately 2,000 participants have contributed over 3,200 poems, which is a true tribute to poets and has brought new vibrancy to Konkani literature.”
The event was attended by Nandagopal Shenoy, president of the Konkani Language and Cultural Foundation, vice president Kiran Buddole, and notable figures including Mangaldas Bhat, Gerald Concesso, Vincent, and Stany Bela. The competition saw participation from 31 children, 9 youths, and 8 senior citizens.
