Mangaluru, Nov 5: The Karnataka Maritime Board (KMB) is planning to introduce the Mangaluru Water Metro Project (MWMP), modelled after the successful Kochi Water Metro system, in the city.
The board has completed preparations to draft a Detailed Project Report (DPR). The project aims to establish a water metro network from Bajal to Maravoor, connecting the Netravati and Phalguni rivers.
The project will be implemented in phases, with the initial phase covering a 30 km stretch and featuring 17 metro stations.
Two years ago, the Maritime Board had proposed a barge project for goods and passenger transportation, leveraging the designation of the Gurpur and Netravati rivers as national waterways 43 and 74, respectively. This project, which was intended to connect Hoige Bazaar to Kulur, has not yet been implemented.
The proposed route and stations for the Water Metro include Bajal, Someshwara Temple, Jeppinamogaru, Bolar, Ullal, Hoige Bazaar, Bengre, Old Port, Boloor, Bokkapatna, Tannirbhavi, Sultan Batheri, NMPT, Bangrakuloor, Kuloor Bridge, Baikampady Industrial Yard, Kunjathbail, and Maravoor Bridge.
Chief minister Siddaramaiah announced this project during the 2024-25 budget presentation. A study will be conducted to assess the demand for metro stations, land availability, and network feasibility. Additionally, a feasibility study will be undertaken for a roll-on/roll-off transportation model to reduce vehicle congestion at Old Port.
The Kochi Water Metro, inaugurated last year as India’s first water metro system, includes 78 boats and 38 jetties, connecting 10 islands. The air-conditioned boats have been well-received by the public as an affordable and safe mode of transportation.
