Mangaluru, Nov 4: Post-monsoon rains in Karnataka have picked up pace due to the influence of Cyclone Dana. A low-intensity surface storm forming off the Andaman coast in the Bay of Bengal is expected to bring increased rainfall after November 9.

Moderate to heavy rainfall is anticipated across north and south interior Karnataka, including the Malnad region, after November 9. Cyclone Dana, which developed in the Bay of Bengal, initially weakened the post-monsoon rains in Karnataka. Had the cyclone persisted, it could have drawn away moisture and further reduced rainfall. However, with the cyclone's impact diminishing, dry weather had prevailed in Karnataka due to the northern winds.

If the intensity of these northern winds increases, cold weather may set in instead of rainfall. While the coastal region experienced limited post-monsoon rainfall, there is still potential for significant rain in Malnad and the interior regions of north and south Karnataka, as seen in previous years.

Weather analysts note that intensified winds over the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea could increase the likelihood of rainfall, whereas northern winds lack the capacity to bring rain and clouds.

C S Patil, senior scientist at the IMD, stated, “Post-monsoon rain this year is higher compared to previous years. More rainfall can be expected in Bidar and Kalaburagi. Additionally, the sporadic rainfall in coastal Karnataka signals the post-monsoon season gaining momentum.”
