Mangalore, Nov 30: The School Day of St Agnes High School was held on Wednesday November 30. Presiding over the programme, Manipal University former vice-chancellor Dr B M Hegde said that an educational institution should educate the students in such a manner that they get knowledge which is not just restricted to obtaining jobs.
“One should compete within one’s self for excellence. Competing with others injects anger and hatred feelings,” he added.
Dr Hegde also lauded the effort of St Agnes institutions which provide ample opportunities for students to excel in literature and sports activities. He also lamented that a few private interest groups are turning the education system into a business.
Dr Hegde also expressed his grief over the lack of interest shown in Kannada medium schools. He said that if a person is good at his mother tongue, he or she will be good at English too. Pointing out that some British schools in London had introduced Sanskrit in their schools, Dr Hegde added that reciting Sanskrit words makes a person intellectually rich which has been proven over time.
Coming down heavily on television channels showing visuals of physical violence and hatred, he said that society can never be enlightened by such hype in media.
Evette Pereira, president of executive committee of PTA, Aiada Barboza, and Sr Maria Kripa were present.
Merit certificates were distributed by Dr B M Hegde. A cultural programme followed in the evening.
