Udupi, Nov 29: Two fishing boats which had left Malpe port on November 19 have sunk. All the fishermen on these boats have been rescued.
A deep sea boat, ‘Sri Govinda’, owned by Vinod G Tingalaya from Malpe, drowned due to strong waves near Bhatkal port. The six fishermen on board were saved by the fishermen on another boat nearby. Loss due to this incident has been put at Rs 30 lac.
Another boat, ‘Rayan’, owned by Rihana Parveen from Malpe, drowned some distance away from Bhatkal port, while returning after conducting fishing at sea on Monday evening at around 7 pm.
Buffeted by strong waves, planks of the boat got loosened and gave way, allowing sea water to gush in. The fishermen were rescued by another boat nearby. Loss in this case has been estimated at Rs 32 lac.
Several traditional boats at various mini ports on the coast were damaged, and equipments including nets, ropes, and weights used for nets, drowned, after these boats anchored in rivulets and canals got dragged into the sea because of strong draught of water.
