Puttur, Aug 27: The Humanities Department of St Philomena College organized a program titled ‘Besaayadattha Namma Chiththa-Our Focus on Agriculture’ at the farm of Shiva Bhat, head of the Sanskrit Department of the college.

The event took place at his agricultural fields in Devalike Kaniyaru, near Keyyur.

In his introductory speech, Dr Norbert Mascarenhas, dean and head of the Humanities Department, highlighted the significance of agriculture. He explained the process of rice cultivation, various paddy varieties, and the agricultural practices unique to the Tulu Nadu region to the students.

The program sponsor, Shiva Bhat, provided a detailed explanation of traditional rice transplanting techniques to the students.

Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, principal of the college, presided over the event. In his address, he emphasized the connection between rural life and well-being. “We are all people from the villages. Let us cherish and embrace village life. The beauty of rural life should be integrated into our own lives. During the COVID-19 pandemic, while urban dwellers faced numerous hardships, rural communities managed to sail across through with resilience. We should adopt this way of life and live our lives with a similar sense of fulfilment,” he said.

During the event, Shiva Bhat and his mother were felicitated by the college. The students sang traditional Paddanas (folk songs) of Tulu Nadu, typically sung during the rice transplanting process.

The event began with a welcome by student Sushmita, followed by a vote of thanks by Shreesma. The program was compered by Pooja.

Under the guidance of Shiva Bhat, all the faculty members and students of the Humanities Department, along with the principal, participated in the rice transplanting activity, making the program a success. The day concluded with various games and competitions held in the muddy fields, adding a fun and memorable touch to the event.
