Mangaluru, Jul 13: To commemorate Vanamahotsava, St Mary’s PU college celebrated green day with great zeal and enthusiasm on July 12, in the college auditorium, to raise awareness about environmental conservations and promote sustainable practices.
The programme commenced by invoking the blessings of the Almighty with a prayer service and prayer song by the students of II Commerce. The audience was enthralled to see the dance drama, mime show, and dance that depicted the importance of Mother Nature and highlighted on the significance of environmental conservation.
Jestalaxmi (councilor and environmentalist) was the chief guest for the occasion. She was escorted to the dais by Kadeeja Naseeha (eco club secretary). The stage was graced by the presence of the college administrator – Sr Marie Lucy and principal in-charge Vijayalakshmi. Jestalaxmi was welcomed by the college principal with a bouquet of roses followed by an oath administered by the secretary of eco club to preserve our nature and protect our environment. The chief guest and other dignitaries inaugurated the program by planting a sapling.
The chief guest in her speech commended the students for their outstanding performances and instilled a sense of environmental consciousness. She shared her ideas on daily basis of practicing sustainability. She stressed on 3R’s of environment i.e. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle are essential parts of waste hierarchy. Along with 3R’s she urged students to include 'Refuse' as an alternative way to reduce number of resources consumed and reduced the amount of waste produced.
The programme was compered by Zainaba Ishana from II Commerce. Shyamala (lecturer in mathematics) welcomed the gathering and Shafathunisa (cultural secretary) proposed the vote of thanks. The programme concluded with the singing of the national anthem.
