Nitin Gadkari calls on party workers to educate people on Emergency at BJP's Bengaluru meet

Bengaluru, Jul 5 (IANS): Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari called on BJP workers to educate people on who committed the sin of damaging the Constitution by imposing the Emergency in the country in 1975.

The new generation needs to be told who was the "murderer of the democracy" in the country, he said while addressing the BJP's executive committee meeting in Bengaluru.

"It was the BJP which strived to protect the Constitution and democracy. Until we are there, we will ensure the protection of the Constitution and democracy with unwavering commitment. This message should reach the people," he said.

"When the Emergency clamped, democracy was killed, freedom of speech was suspended and the media was controlled. Lakhs of BJP workers were jailed under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) for two years. Former late PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, veteran leader L.K. Advani, and late leader George Fernandes were imprisoned in Bengaluru jail. BJP workers fought against the imposition of Emergency... Our workers made sacrifices to save democracy," Union Minister Gadkari said.

"Today, India is seen as the mother of democracy. With a population of 140 crore, we have conviction towards it... The amendments made in the Constitution during the Emergency ended democracy. When the Janata Party came to power at the Centre, all those amendments were struck off," he added.

The Union Minister slammed the Congress for spreading a "false narrative" that the BJP is seeking more than 400 seats in the Parliament to change the Constitution and end reservation.

"The Supreme Court in Kesavananda Bharati case has clearly stated that the salient features of the Constitution can’t be amended despite a majority. BJP never indulged in damaging and amending the Constitution," he said.

Late Indira Gandhi did declare the Emergency in 1975 whereas Modi without declaring imposed it. The current emergency is worse than the 1975 emergency. Unlike now, a very smaller percentage of people were affected in 1975-77 which was for the period of about 18 months. Mrs. Gandhi did pay the price for her action which she deserved. From the current emergency nobody has benefitted except handful of people. Modi has delivered prosperity to only tycoons who are close to him and the general public are heavily affected from his authoritarianism and repression that is quite disturbing. He has assaulted on democracy, civil society and minority rights from his draconian action. Many journalists and political leaders belonging to opposite parties are still languishing in jail without any proof. All the governmental agencies are in his fist. Since 2014, our free democratic society has collapsed and in 2023 India ranked 161 out of 180 countries in the Press Freedom Index. Likewise in Global Hunger Index, India ranked 111 out of 125 countries, which is going down year after year since BJP came to power. In the last 10 years India’s debt is gone up manifold more than India borrowed in the previous 70 years resulting in bleeding of Indian economy from its interest amount. Still BJP is boasting their “performance” and the andh-bhakts are fully andh to see what is really going on.

I thought he is refined and different from others.. Instead of educating Karnataka leaders to stay away from 40%, he is talking about 50 year old matter now..

Listen to the Video of Lalu Prasad Yadav, who was Jailed and was a victim of emergency imposed during late Indira Gandhi. He says, Indira's imposed emergency was better than what's happening nowadays! We see so many activists and leaders, politicians who expose Govt and their policies are punished and jailed, but if they join ruling party, all the charges against them are forgiven and cleared. Kindly look into many massive cracks developed in recently built up expressways, Airports, Bridges! How is that the contractors done so inferior work and have no fear of law imposing Govt? No supervision? All that's tax payers, peoples money! Earlier Rods and Bridges would survive for more than 100 years!

During the emergency in 1975, there was much discipline. The government offices functioned on time; there was no corruption; the students did not resort to strikes; no paper leaks; the benefits were far more than the allegations being made now during the undeclared emergency. Gadkari should educate himself.

People didnt suffer or die because of emergency, worse was a few politicians jailed for a few months. Those who know nothing about emergency imposed by congress, talking bigger noise. Neverthless, it was withdrawn by the same leader who imposed it. Now, take DeMo people died standing in que, there are hundreds of political leaders in prison, for one reason or the other. Media channels are trembling with fear, if any truth hey spit out against BJP, next day there will be ED raid. This is worse than emergency and even BJP knows it. To fool people they are talking of emergency to say, they are better off than during emergency time.

Dear Sir, you used to be famous for your contributions as a Minister of Road transport and Highways and you used to be one of the best India ever saw. But you getting into petty politics is not you at all. It is very important that you focus on the amount of delay happening in the road construction between Mangalore and Hassan. There are nearly about 7 flyovers between Hassan & Nelamangala which started much after Sakleshpur road work and already in use. But the roads towards Hassan and Mangalore are still in a pathetic condition and your department is turning a blind eye. You should also see the pathetic condition of the highways passing through Mangalore city. And as of today they are filling potholes with mud. What a pathetic life people of our city live in ?? We pay road tax and over that we are forced to cough out money for toll. Out of the one rupee we earn, I think we pay about 64 paise literally as taxes in different ways. But what do we really get. Getting abused by different govt officials ? Rowdyism at toll gate ?? Corruption at RTO & traffic police station besides some choosiest words ?? Look at so many of the HNIs running away to Dubai. Atleast you all can learn from that. But you all will never learn, because you are simply running the govt by abusing the opposition. Please stop this. Request the bhakths & gulams to stop countering and start digesting the fact that this is your country too and instead taking a philosophical stand, start questioning. Be it Congress Be it BJP.

During emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi, media was controlled. But, BJP kept mainstream media in their pocket ever since they came to power, so that media dont report any wrong doing by BJP Govt. BJP made govt agencies their puppets and misusing them against opposition parties. This is undeclared emergency
