Mangalore, Aug 30: Addressing the participants of a function organized at Town Hall in the city on Monday August 29, state minister for ports and inland water transport, Krishna J Palemar, spelt out details of some new schemes the government proposes to introduce for the welfare of minority communities.
“We have envisaged schemes aimed at helping economically backward members of backward communities to own land and houses. The government is waiting for the report of the financial committee for their clearance,” he said.
Palemar also said that the government aims at ensuring that people from all sections of the society and all walks of life including minorities and dalits, become self reliant. He reasoned that once this is achieved, the country will register overall development in all fronts.
The function was organized by Karnataka Minorities Development Corporation in connection with the distribution of cheques to beneficiaries of the corporation under its different schemes for the year 2011-12. Palemar handed over cheques amounting to Rs 1,45,10,000 including subsidy of Rs 34.98 lac, to 1,194 beneficiaries hailing from Mangalore North, South, and Moodbidri assembly constituencies.
N B Abubakker, chairman of Karnataka Minorities Development Corporation, in his introductory address, gave details of various schemes of the corporation and the number of beneficiaries assisted and funds sanctioned to them under different heads. He said that the corporation wants to lay emphasis on education, and also to ensure that the benefits of the corporation’s schemes reach the needy without the intervention of middlemen.
Deputy speaker of Karnataka assembly, N Yogish Bhat, presided. Zilla panchayat president, K T Shyaja Bhat, MLAs, Abhay Chandra Jain and U T Khader, chairman of State Minorities Commission, Anwar Manippady, zilla panchayat chief executive officer, K N Vijay Prakash, and others participated as guests.
District manager of the corporation, S D Somappa, welcomed. Sridhar Bhandary proposed vote of thanks. Mohammed Rafi compered the programme.
