Los Angeles, Jan 10: A series of devastating wildfires have wreaked havoc across the greater Los Angeles area, leaving communities in ruins as the infernos continue to blaze uncontrollably. Over 10,000 homes, businesses, and other structures have been destroyed, and nearly 180,000 residents have been forced to evacuate.
Five major fires remain active in Los Angeles County, scorching over 35,000 acres (approximately 55 square miles) an area larger than San Francisco according to Cal Fire. Among them, the Palisades fire has emerged as the most destructive in the city’s history, burning almost 20,000 acres and remaining only 6% contained.
Growing fires and grim toll
The Eaton Fire, located near Altadena and Pasadena, has spread across 13,000 acres with 0% containment, posing a severe threat, as strong winds fuel its growth. Meanwhile, the Kenneth fire, which broke out near Woodland Hills on Thursday, initially prompted widespread evacuation orders before they were lifted.
The fires have transformed entire neighbourhoods into ash and claimed at least 10 lives, with authorities warning that the death toll could rise. The Los Angeles medical examiner’s office confirmed the fatalities, as emergency teams continue search and rescue operations.
Federal assistance pledged
In response to the crisis, President Joe Biden announced that the federal government will cover the full cost of wildfire response efforts in Southern California for 180 days. This funding will support debris removal, emergency shelter, first responders’ salaries, and other critical measures to aid recovery.
The fires have caused unprecedented destruction, leaving a long and challenging road to recovery for the affected communities. Firefighting crews, bolstered by federal assistance, are working tirelessly to contain the blazes and provide relief to those affected.
