Kasargod: Robbers Try in Vain to Steal Union Bank ATM

Kasargod, Aug 22: Thanks to the presence of mind exhibited by the watchman of a jewellery shop, a gang of thieves who were trying to carry the ATM of Union Bank of India away, aborted their attempt and fled. The incident occurred in the wee hours of Sunday August 21.

Some thieves entered an ATM of Union Bank of India’s located by the side of Kailas Theatre in Kanhangad. It is positioned a little away from Josco Jewellery building. As their efforts to extract cash from the machine failed, the gang of thieves1 tried to remove the machine and carry it away. The watchman of a jewellery shop nearby, who heard strange noise flashed his torch at them. By the time, the robbers had moved the ATM for about ten meters. However, taken aback by the sudden turn of events, they developed cold feet and fled in a Tata Sumo vehicle. Reportedly, the gang had five members, and the vehicle they used bore no registration number.

The bank confirmed that no cash was removed from the ATM. Three pillows, which the thieves would have planned to use for shifting the machine, were found from the spot. A sticker was found to have been pasted on the closed circuit television camera of the ATM.

On the basis of a complained filed by the bank manager, Venugopal, the personnel of Hosadurga police station registered a complaint. Sniffer dogs were pressed into service. Investigation has been taken up.
