Udupi, Oct 4: As a part of Swachhta Hi Seva Campaign, on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanthi, the National Service Scheme (NSS), Youth Red Cross (YRC) and Rotaract Club of Shri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology and Management (SMVITM), Bantakal, organized beach cleaning programme at Kodi Beach and Malpe beach, Kaup Beach respectively on October 1-2.
A group of 300 student volunteers of NSS-YRC-RC Club along with Nagaraja Rao, institutional NSS–YRC-RC unit coordinator, Raghunath, Ganesh Prasad, Jayaram Nayak, departmental coordinators, Dr Sudarshan Rao, Dr Raviprabha, Dr Manjunath, Paul Suraj participated in the beach cleaning programme. They selected around 800 meters stretch of the beach and collected a heap of non-biodegradable items, foot wears, glass bottles, plastics, food wrappers and polythene bags. Subsequently, the waste was segregated and disposed of properly.
The beach clean-ups help to raise awareness around plastic pollution and the current impacts of plastic on the environment. Clean beaches are essential to healthy coastal habitats and the well-being of people who visit them. Dr Thirumaleshwara Bhat, principal, SMVITM, Bantakal, Dr Ganesh Aithal vice principal conveyed their best wishes to the programme. The members of gram panchayat Kodi, Malpe, Kaup and the authorities of Beach Development Association appreciated the work carried out by the Institution.
