Moodbidri, Aug 28: Carmel School celebrated the National Librarians’ Day on August 24.
The National Librarians’ Day is observed on August 12 every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of Padmashri Dr Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan known as the father of library science in India. The school marked the importance of this day through a soulful prayer song.
Gracy Monteiro, PhD in library science and librarian in Aloysius College was the chief guest on the occasion. She was welcomed by Sr Preena the vice principal with a potted sapling. Sr Ranitha the coordinator also graced the occasion with her presence. The guest in her speech addressed the significance of the day and encouraged the students to read more books available in the school library. Methods of reading along with its importance was explained. Rules to be followed by the students in the library were also illustrated. She also referred to the library as the deposit of accumulated knowledge and the librarian as the caretaker of this deposit which highlighted the significance of this day.
Further, Sr Preena AC also wished the librarians on this auspicious day. To keep up the spirit of this prestigious day with the able guidance of Shaila various activities was conducted for the students of grade VII to grade IX like marking all States of India on the given physical map, and knowing about five laws of library science, names of the books along with names of author was played through musical chair, which kept participants engaged and interested. The winners of the activities were also gifted a book for their active participation.
The programme was beautifully compered by Keertan Salian of grade IX, Sanvi Riona of grade VII enthusiastically welcomed the gathering. Vote of thanks was proposed by Deepan Bhandary of grade IX. Biography of father of library science of India was accurately articulated by Sudhanshu and Neha of grade VII. Chethana, librarian was congratulated and appreciated for maintaining the books in the library in a well-organized manner and for timely guiding the teachers to avail with all necessary resource books.
