Udupi: Anti-drugs awareness workshop organised by MAHE

Udupi, Jul 24: The Department of Student Affairs, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Manipal, organised a district-level workshop on the theme, 'Youth Against Drugs - a strategic intervention by KSLSA through NALSA – legal services to the victims of drug abuse and eradication of drug menace scheme, 2015' on July 22, at Dr TMA Pai Auditorium, 3rd Floor, KMC, Manipal. in association with Ministry of social justice & Empowerment, Government of India, Karnataka state legal services authority, Bengaluru, District Legal Services Authority, Bar Association, Udupi district administration, Zilla Panchayat, Department of Empowerment of Differently Abled and Senior Citizens, Health and Family Welfare Services, Department of Public Instruction, Vaikunta Baliga College of Law, Kunjibettu, Udupi. Justice John Michael Cunha, former judge, of Karnataka high court and designated judge heading the Committee of NALSA, inaugurated the event, leading the charge to eradicate the drug menace. Dr Sharath Kumar Rao K, pro vice chancellor, Health Sciences, MAHE, Manipal, presided over the function.

Akshay M Hakay, superintendent of police, Udupi, B Nagaraj, president, Bar Association, Udupi, Dr P Giridhar Kini, Registrar, MAHE, Manipal,  Prasanna H, Chief Executive Officer, Zilla Panchayat, Udupi, Raghavendra Shettigar, deputy secretary, KSLSA, Bengaluru and Maruthi, deputy director, Department of Undergraduate Education, Udupi, were the guests of honor.

Dr P Giridhar Kini, registrar of MAHE, Manipal, addressed the student community and administered the oath.

Dr Geetha Maiya, director, Student Affairs, MAHE, Manipal, proposed a vote of thanks and extended her gratitude to everyone who made this workshop a success.

Sharmila S, senior civil judge & member secretary, DLSA, Udupi, Dr Geetha Maiya, director Student Affairs, MAHE, and deputy directors Prof Roshan David Jathanna, Dr Rashmi Yogesh Pai, Dr Aravind Pandey were present. Dr Vinod Nayak, professor, Forensic Medicine at KMC, was also present.

Resource persons of the day, Dr P V Bhandary, director and consultant psychiatrist, Dr A V Baliga Group of Institutions, Udupi, and Akshay M Hakay, superintendent of police delivered the session on menace caused by drug use, the role of law and order in tackling this and the importance of saying no to substance abuse in the first place.

The program was attended by more than 500 college students of Udupi and Manipal, authorities from Karnataka State Legal Services Authority, Bengaluru, District Legal Services Authority, Bar Association, Udupi, district administration, zilla panchayat, Udupi, Department of Empowerment of Differently Abled and Senior Citizens, Health and Family Welfare Services, Department of Public instructions and also faculty and staff of MAHE.

Shravya Baasri, a research scholar from the Gandhian Centre for Philosophical Arts and Sciences, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, rendered the invocation.
