Kolkata, May 26 (IANS): A comprehensive policy for all round development of West Bengal's sports and sportspersons is in the pipeline, said state Sports Minister Madan Mitra Wednesday.
"A proposal has been made for a comprehensive sports policy with a detailed account of what the government intends to do on the sports front. The process has been initiated. We have just assumed office but we can assure you that the policy would be ready soon," said Mitra.
He accused the former Left Front government of ruining sports in the state.
"The earlier government was more intent on playing politics than sports. They have done nothing in the name of maintenance. The infrastructure is in shambles. The grounds have become dens for anti-social elements. Women are afraid of going near these grounds after darkness."
Freeing sports from politics, bringing sportspersons under the ambit of Mediclaim and development of local sports along with major sports of cricket, football, hockey etc. are his priorities as an administrator, he said.
Mitra also said that he will lay emphasis on allocation of sufficient funds by the government for development and maintenance of sports infrastructure.
If need be, sponsors will be invited for the necessary funds, he added.
