Karkala, Dec 22: Police arrested Prasad (34), a resident of Arambodi Kantarabettu in Bantwal and his accomplice Shiba (39), a resident of Kalya on the accusation of stealing golden ornaments and silver amounting to several lac of rupees from the Godrej cupboard of a house, the inmates of which went for a Mehendi function.
The theft occurred at the house of Usha Jagadish Anchan, resident of Kangithu, Kalya of Karkala taluk on December 3.
A case was registered of theft of 156 gram of gold ornaments worth Rs 4.50 lac plus other valuables amounting to Rs 9.75 lac.
The police have confiscated 216 grams of gold ornaments worth Rs 9.75 lac and 77 grams of silver ornaments from the accused.
Prasad (Pacchu) has theft cases registered against him in Bantwal rural, Moodbidri and Karkala police stations. He is also accused in Sudarshan Jain murder case of Moodbidri in addition to a POCSO case under the limits of Venur police station.
Owner of the house Usha Anchan and Shiba, who cooperated in the theft know each other since several years. Their houses are just 50 meters apart. Both used to go to functions together. On the day of the theft also accused Shiba and Usha Anchan had gone to the Mehendi programme together. Generally, they used to go by a scooter. On that day, Shiba told Usha that they will go by walk leisurely chatting to one another. Usha got fooled by sweet talk of Shiba and went by walk to the Mehendi programme. Shiba also asked Usha not to wear the big mangalasutra. So Usha kept the big one at home and wore a small one.
Shiba, had informed the matter to her relative Prasad about the Mehendi programme and the gold ornaments at home. Based on that Prasad stole the valuable. Shiba acted as if she does not anything even after the theft and expressed concern with owner of the house Usha.
The accused have been produced in court and are remanded to judicial custody.
