Bangalore: Girish Koushik Wins Asian Under-14 Chess Championship

Bangalore, May 21: Girish A Koushik of Mysore won the under-14 Asian Chess Championship held at Subic City in the Philippines which concluded on Saturday May 21. He scored 7.5 points out of 9. 

Stany G A of Shimoga won the silver medal in the open under-18 category by scoring 7 out of 9 points.

Indians won ten out of the twelve titles in the Championship.

I M Debashis Das of Cuttuck also scored 7 out of maximum 9 points, but based on a better tie break score Debashis was declared as champion and Stany placed runner-up.

Indian girls were more impressive than the boys, winning all the six titles. India did not win the boys under-16 and under-12 titles. In the under-16 boys, Antonio Viani D'Cunha of Mangalore who was leading with 5.5/6 lost his last three games and missed the podium. In the under-12 section, Aravindh Chithambaram tied for the first and won a silver medal.

Among the winners, impressive was L.N. Ram Aravind of Trichi who became the only player to win all nine games in all 12 sections.

Indians won 18 medals out of a maximum 36. India's pet section was the Boys or Open under-10 section and the Girls under-10 section. We recorded podium sweeps there. All the three in both these sections scored the same number of points and tied for the first place.
 
Debashis Das (U-18), Girish Koushik (U-14), Sankalp Baliarsingh (U-10), Ram Aravind (U-8) in boys and Rucha Pujari (U-18), Nandhidhaa (U-16), G.K. Monnisha (U-14), Ivana Furtado (U-12), Bidhar Rutumbara (U-10), C Lakshmi (U-8) became Asian age group champions.
