New Orleans, Jan 9: Your morning cup of coffee could do more than energize your day—it might help lower the risk of early death, especially from cardiovascular disease, according to a new study published in the European Heart Journal.
The study, led by Dr Lu Qi from Tulane University’s School of Public Health, found that people who drink coffee in the morning have a lower risk of mortality compared to those who drink coffee throughout the day or not at all.
Key Findings
• Morning coffee drinkers were 16% less likely to die from any cause.
• They were also 31% less likely to die from cardiovascular disease.
• The study revealed no mortality benefits for those drinking coffees throughout the day.
The research analysed data from over 40,000 adults in the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 1999 and 2018. Participants reported their coffee consumption patterns, including the timing of intake.
Dr Qi suggested that consuming coffee later in the day may disrupt circadian rhythms and melatonin levels, which could increase cardiovascular risks such as high blood pressure and inflammation.
