Recipes - Horsegram Idli

Ingredients:

½ cup horse gram
½ cup urad dal / black gram
1 ½ cup idli rawa
½ ” ginger
1 green chilly
¼ tsp. asafetida ( hing)
1 cup grated coconut

Method:

Wash and soak  horsegram and urad daal  separately for 4-5 hours or overnight. Grind the daals separately adding little water. Combine them after grinding. Finely chop ginger and green chilly.  Mix washed rawa into the daal mixture and mix well. Add ginger, green chilly, asafetida, coconut and salt. Adjust the consistency to medium thick. Grease the idli moulds and  fill the moulds with batter until ½ and steam them for about  15 minutes. Serve with chutney or any gravy.

    @Sybil serrao,mumbai,Horse gram is what we say in Konkani,kulith,a red coloured lentils sees as toordal but red colour.Previously farmers used to feed their buffelows/horse after work in fields.(cooked)

    Dear Avril,I saw your Video of making idlis.you were pouring the dough into cold moulds first.My tip is first place the moulds in the vessel so that it becomes warm and then pour the batter.so that it puffs up better.Same procedure further by second raw.Dough poured first will be cold and falls back when opens the lid.Thank you.
