Puttur, Sep 2: “Education develops personality; education improves our inner strength and erases our weaknesses. Education makes the personality to change the world. It is necessary that students should have love and respect for their alma mater, wherever they go they should never forget the nation and the educational institutions which formed their future said the professor of English, Sacred Heart College, Madanthyar and former principal of St Philomena College, Puttur. Prof Leo was speaking as the chief guest on the occasion of college annual day celebrations of St Philomena College August 29.
On lauding the efforts of the college in providing the quality education, Prof Leo Noronha said, students should not bring in negativity into their minds as God has given varied strengths and talents to each and every one, it is only necessary to know and display the latent talents whenever opportunity knocks. Students should learn to remain focused and orient themselves on new issues to reach the horizon of success and to learn to live amicably in the society where we live in. Fr Stany Pinto, the campus director gave the felicitation address on Prof Leo Noronha.
Fr Jerome Lawrence Mascarenhas, the correspondent of the college, presided over the function. He remembered the contribution of Msgr. Patrao who has established the college in 1958, which has given immense contribution to the field of education and produced a number of talented personalities to the society who are serving in various fields across the globe. He remembered and thanked Michel D’Souza who was alumnus of the college for his great contributions towards the renovation of the institution. Fr Jerome Lawrence Mascarenhas has also called others to follow and provide support for the growth of institution.
On the occasion of college day, the lecturers who attained superannuation Prof J B Sequira, Prof Dinakar Rao, Prof Minakshee and Prof Venkateshwari were honoured.
Fr stany Pinto, 1st rank holder MA Education from Kuvempu University, Lt Johnson David Sequeira 7th rank holder in MA Sociology from KSOU Mysore, Dr Radhakrishna Gowda, department of BBA, Dr Praveen P D’Souza and Dr Ashith V K from PG department Physics were felicitated for securing PhD degree.
Sports achievers Sinchana D Gowda(surfing), Nachappa K D (hockey), Naushad Abdulla (Badminton), Tanveer P A, Solomon Roshan Joseph, Dheeraj Srinivas, Prathamesh, Srrikanth Murgodu, Mohammed Junaid, Pavan T R (Football), Raksha Anchan and Kiran who participated in RD Parade Delhi representing St Philomena College were honored. The teachers and students who completed KSET, SLET examinations were also honoured on the occasion.
Dr Norbert Mascarenhas, Prof Nagaraju, Prof Vasudeva, Dr Vijaya Kumar Moleyar, Harshith R, Srimani, students welfare officers Dr Chandrashekar K and Bharathi S Rai, physical education director Elias Pinto, NCC officer Johnson D Sequira involved in various responsibilities.
Fr Dr Antony Prakash Monterio, the principal of the college presented the detailed report of activities conducted in the college and achievement of students and staff.
Guest of honour Fr Stany Pinto, campus director, Fr Ashok Rayan Crasta, principal St Philomena PU college, Maurice Mascarenhas, vice president Puttur parish council, president of PTA Krishnaprasad Alva, alumni association president A J Rai, president of student council, Amith S Aranha, secretary Prakyath T J, joint secretary and Mahalasa Pai were present on the dais.
Students of performing arts rendered prayer. Prof Udaya, vice principal welcomed and staff secretary Prof Ganesh Bhat proposed vote of thanks, Suraksha, PG department of Computer Science, compered the programme.
Various cultural programmes – dance, song, and short skit were presented. Teachers were also showcased their dance talent and received ovation by the audience.
