Udupi: 'Atidonji Dina' held by Nitte Institute of Hospitality Services

Udupi, Aug 4: Aati, the month in the Tulu calendar is considered to be a dull month, wherein no celebrations and auspicious occasions are planned. However, the very same month opens doors to a great world of culinary delights specifically utilising the edibles found in the vicinity during the monsoon.

The same essence of the culinary delight associated with the month of Aati was celebrated by the Nitte Institute of Hospitality Services, formerly known as Sarosh Institute of Hotel Administration, on July 22.

Named 'Atidonji Dina', the event focused on bringing out the vibrant culture and gastronomical side of Tulunadu to keep the younger generation acquainted with the same.

Guest of honour Veda J Rai, principal Amar Z Cherian, college advisor Matharani Mathias, staff coordinator Donald D'Souza, student council president Abdul Rasheed and secretary Lolita D'Souza were present.

The programme began with the vibrant procession with the beats of the Nasik band and was inaugurated by the dignitaries by opening the coconut inflorescence followed by a formal function which included Prayer, a brief introduction about Aati by assistant professor Nirupama, felicitation to the guest of honour Veda J Rai.

In a bid to showcase the Tulu culture, Aati Kalanja act was performed. The students come up with a cultural show which highlighted the rich Tulu culture, which included Pili Nalike, Kangil Nalike, Kambala, Korida katta, Taray koota, Koti – Chennayya etc. and some folk dances. However, the major attraction was the lunch, with mouth-watering dishes of Tulunadu. The entire cooking was done by the students with the help of teachers and other staff. The dishes included Panaka, Manjal iretha Addey, PelakayAddey, Moode - Padengi Ghasi, Thimare Chutney, Ettidapodi Chutney, Kuduthha Chutney, Kadle Balyar, Pulitha Uppad, Uppadachil, Tajank pelathari Palya, Pathrode, Menthe Ganji, Tevudantda Sambar, Punarpuli Rasam, padengibele payasa. These dishes are unique in Tulunadu.

All in all the event was not just a reminder of the glorious Tulunadu culture and delicacies, but it was a link to introduce the students to the deeper side of Tulunadu cooking and culture.

A lot of fun-filled games were organised for the staff and students. Student council president Rasheed welcomed the gathering and secretary Lolita delivered the vote of thanks. The entire programme was compared by Thrishool Shetty and Melita Coelho.
